In the Student Advisory Council (SAC) enthusiastic students work in the field of urban planning in and around the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. The SAC collaborates with both Groningen Bereikbaar (a planning coalition) and the Faculty of Spatial Sciences of the University of Groningen. Worldwide, Groningen is famous because of its immense bike share of over 60 percent and Traffic Circulation Plan. Moreover, the concept of the SAC is unique within the Netherlands due to a collaboration between students, academics, and practitioners.

The SAC was founded in April 2013. Four students conducted a first research focusing on students’ commuting behavior. The results of this research have been published in the advisory report ‘De student op de fiets‘ (only in Dutch). After the success of this project a plan was made to give the SAC a more structural position. This has led to an official partnership between the three parties involved. The activities of the SAC mainly center around three themes: being a research institute, connecting parties, and consultancy.

In the SAC students use their theoretical knowledge in practice. By applying multiple methods and collaborating with different actor groups, students are prepared in a unique way  for future professional careers in either practice or science. Moreover, collecting, bundling, and passing on knowledge to new students is our core business.

Due to our central position in a large network of science, education, and practices we are able to intermediate between many parties. In our projects we have already worked with a student panel, younger scholars, and an expert panel.

Due to our wide network, experience, and knowledge we are capable of consulting to both public and private parties. Our work is relevant for universities, private and public companies, governments, consulting firms, and non-profit organizations.
